The Philippines has one of the highest birth rates in Asia. Economists say that unintended pregnancies are stifling growth and driving millions into poverty. However, the government has refused to promote modern contraceptives which have succeeded in curbing population growth elsewhere on the continent.

As Eid al-Fitr was being celebrated two weeks ago in the Muslim-majority southern Philippines, the military launched lethal air and artillery strikes against suspected Muslim separatist Abu Sayyaf fighters, causing outrage among Muslims. The ensuing battle left almost 50 people dead including up to 24 fighters and eight soldiers. But as Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Jolo in southern Philippines, the Muslim general who ordered the attack is making no apologies.

The chief suspect in the killing of at least 57 people in the southern Philippines has turned himself in to local authorities. Andal Ampatuan Jr, a local mayor and member of a powerful political clan in the Maguindanao province, says he surrendered to prove his innocence. But Aljazeera later spoke to a man who said he was there when the killings happened, and he laid the blame squarely on Ampatuan Jr. Marga Ortigas reports from Maguindanao.

With 7107 islands, and a coastline twice the length of that of the United States, the Philippines can claim to be Asia's Beach Capital. Enjoy the warm crystal blue waters of both the China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Mention the Philippines and images of long, white sand beaches and bodies of water blessed with a variety of marine life come to mind.

March 1996 We offer you a shocking report on child labour in the Philippines. Mari-Lou is having the best day of her life. She and two friends are screaming at the top of their voices as they descend down a water chute. A government social worker has treated the girls to a day at an amusement park to help them recover from the trauma of being locked up, beaten, unpaid and sexually abused. Recruited from their peasant village to became maids in Manila, they have been totally exploited by their employment agency. Impoverished families are forced to let their children suffer slave labour. At a gold mine, Joel makes $8 a day scrabbling in the mud for any gold ore which spills beneath the wheels of endless trucks. In Manila, 13 year old Brian Marsada is locked into a dim warehouse where he bottles bleach. When it is raided by government forces, Brian escapes. A journey home to the lush but poverty stricken island of Mindanao in the Philippines reunites him with his family. His bright western clothes contrast with his father's torn and dirty shirt. Now embarrassed by the shabby hamlet, he misses the cheap, coloured lights of Manila. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

The Philippines is dealing with its worst flooding in a generation, and the authorities admit they are overwhelmed by the emergency. Torrential rains from Tropical Storm Ketsana flooded the capital, Manila, and 25 nearby provinces on Saturday. The official death toll has risen above 100 people and many Filipinos remain trapped in their homes by the water. Marga Ortigas reports from Manila.

Scores of people have been killed and thousands have fled their homes in the Philippines after a whole month's rain fell in just six hours. Houses were swept away by swollen rivers and people were trapped on rooftops and flooded highways. The storm is said to have brought the heaviest rainfall seen in the country since 1967. Thousands of travellers are stuck in the chaos, including Al Jazeera's correspondent Marga Ortigas, who filed this report from Manila airport.

The Philippines government says 240 people have died in severe flooding caused by Tropical Storm Ketsana. The disaster has also left more than 450000 people displaced. But while flood waters recede, questions about the government's response to the crisis have begun to surface. With homes still under water, many Filipinos remain homeless and despondent. Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports.
